‘Turkish GTA’ Creator Shares Gameplay as Activists Claim Game Threatens State Order

Turkish indie developer Burak Aksahin has drawn scrutiny online following the gameplay reveal of ALATURKA, a low-poly open-world action game set around the 1970s Bosphorus.

The story follows a village native venturing beyond his hometown for the first time to earn money in the big city through both legitimate and illicit means.

Swallow your pride in this city where you came to save money. From slicing doner to smuggling, do whatever it takes to get by. Meet locals across legal and illegal jobs, and remember: every lira counts.

While the title draws comparisons to Grand Theft Auto, it sparked backlash among local social media commentators. Critics, including a user named juanelbarrett, raised concerns over the ability to shoot and kill Turkish police officers, arguing that such mechanics could lead to real-world unrest despite accepting similar violence in Rockstar Games titles set abroad.

juanelbarrett warned that the creator could face legal ramifications if a real-world offender cites the project as an influence.

Developing a game where you can shoot Turkish police straight in the head is fraught with problems in many ways. You could create an opportunity for our domestic traitors [in Turkey] to vent and nurture their bad feelings. Yes, we have done this [to police] in GTA, but toward Turkish police we cannot and should not do this. Because of a few complaints and instances where you are pointed to as an inspiration, you could very easily bring serious trouble upon yourself. I advise you to think it over once more.

ALATURKA is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
