While embarking on a press tour for his upcoming Hulu documentary, Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, the renowned Blink-182 drummer has once again been compelled to confront the most harrowing day of his existence.

Demonstrating the profound emotional recovery he has achieved since the devastating 2008 private jet crash—which tragically claimed the lives of the pilot, co-pilot, and two of his dearest companions—Barker now articulates those harrowing memories with remarkable composure, even if the psychological scars remain visible.

“I battled immense survivor’s remorse, hit rock bottom, and experienced truly dark psychological states,” Barker, now 50, revealed to Chris Connelly of Good Morning America during an exclusive Billboard preview of their extensive interview, scheduled to broadcast Thursday morning (Aug. 13). “They immediately assigned a trauma specialist who remained by my side daily.”

When Connelly inquired about the most effective coping mechanisms for his recovery, Barker shared, “My trauma specialist advised me, ‘From this moment onward, you must spend your life completely detached from toxic influences and unnecessary stress… spend every single day at home with your children if that brings you peace.’”

The documentary examines the catastrophic aviation accident that unfolded shortly after Barker completed a concert with his close friend and frequent collaborator Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein in South Carolina on September 19, 2008. The pair boarded a hurriedly chartered private aircraft that abruptly caught fire during takeoff, resulting in Barker and Goldstein emerging as the sole survivors. The tragedy claimed the lives of Barker’s close aides, assistant Chris “Lil Chris” Baker and security guard Charles “Che” Still, alongside pilot Sarah Lemmon and co-pilot James Bland.

Both survivors sustained critical injuries; Barker suffered severe burns covering 65 percent of his body, necessitating 27 distinct surgical procedures over the ensuing years. Goldstein, who had previously been transparent about his battles with substance dependency, was tragically discovered deceased in his New York City residence a year later following an accidental drug overdose.

Premiering on Hulu this Sunday (Aug. 16), the film explores Barker’s early musical trajectory prior to finding fame with Blink-182, alongside deep dives into the events leading up to and following the crash. The project features thoughtful commentary from notable musicians, including The Roots drummer Questlove, the late Foo Fighters percussionist Taylor Hawkins, Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong, Mötley Crüe powerhouse Tommy Lee, and longtime Blink-182 bandmates Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge.

Additional segments from Connelly’s in-depth conversation with Barker will air Thursday (Aug. 13) during Good Morning America (7–9 a.m. EDT).
