Since its launch last year, Total Chaos by Trigger Happy Interactive has cemented itself as a standout title in the horror genre, earning critical acclaim on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Following a successful New Game+ update earlier this year—which introduced a gripping new finale and a Nintendo Switch 2 port—the developer is now set to deliver a nostalgic twist with an upcoming “Retro Mode.”
Publisher Apogee Entertainment confirmed the news via Bluesky, announcing that this new mode will transform the game with gritty, pixelated visuals and low-poly horror aesthetics. Fittingly, this update also adds a brand-new ending crafted as a nod to the game’s roots; Total Chaos actually began its life as a total conversion mod for Doom II, and this new conclusion leans heavily into that legacy.

Set within the claustrophobic confines of an abandoned mining town, Total Chaos masterfully weaves together environmental puzzles, tense crafting mechanics, and visceral first-person combat. The narrative follows a protagonist grappling with both a decaying, infected populace and the unraveling of their own psyche. It remains an essential play for horror aficionados, offering roughly a dozen hours of atmospheric dread.
While an official release date for the Retro Mode update hasn’t been set, Apogee confirms it is coming soon. In the meantime, you can dive deeper into the game’s mechanics in our official review or explore my editorial on the game’s thematic connection to internal struggle and catharsis.
