Memory Market Crisis Has Not Affected Valve’s Steam Deck 2 Plans

Valve is monitoring ongoing market conditions and continuing development on its new device.

It is already known that Valve is working on Steam Deck 2. The developers themselves discussed this in interviews with media outlets this summer.

However, the crisis in the memory market shows no signs of easing. The cost of graphics cards and gaming consoles continues to rise, and prices for the Steam Deck have already been increased as well. Because of this, logical concerns arose that Valve might have decided to reconsider its plans regarding the new device.

This month, Valve revealed pricing for the Steam Frame and a lineup of accessories, while outlets began publishing interviews with the developers. IGN managed to speak with the specialists, and during the conversation, they touched upon not only the company’s new VR headset but also Steam Deck 2.

When asked directly whether the current component shortage has affected Valve’s approach to developing Steam Deck 2, developer Pierre-Loup Griffais answered that it has not “really” done so.

According to Griffais, the company still “starts from the user experience and what [Valve] wants to offer players.”

Griffais recalled that the developers had already stated their position: for the future of the Steam Deck, it is important to “deliver a truly generational leap in performance,” and the company’s approach in this regard remains unchanged:

It all just comes down to evaluating current conditions and figuring out how and when we can release such a device. But from the standpoint of user experience and the product we are trying to build, our goals remain virtually the same.
