Too Team-Oriented: Former Designer Explains Highguard’s Failure
Wildlight Entertainment’s Highguard is facing a dramatic downturn, with its Steam peak plummeting to just over 500 players in the last 24 hours—a staggering fall from its all-time high of nearly 98,000.
Garner suggests that the game’s steep learning curve and demanding mechanics for movement and gunplay have hindered its growth. Highguard features a dense structure of looting, objective capturing, and overtime phases; while rewarding for veteran players, these layers often prove too cumbersome for newcomers to navigate.
Although Wildlight is adhering to its content roadmap—including the introduction of a new mode that bypasses the resource-gathering phase—the challenge of stabilizing the player base is becoming increasingly steep.
