During the 2011 recording of her televised concert special, A Night With Beyoncé, the global icon was secretly navigating the early, tumultuous weeks of her first pregnancy. While the audience witnessed a masterclass in vocal prowess, the singer was privately battling severe morning sickness—a struggle that remained entirely hidden from the spotlight.

Tina Knowles-Lawson recently revisited this pivotal moment in her daughter’s career, sharing a throwback clip on social media of Beyoncé performing “Best Thing I Never Had.” Reflecting on the intense production, the businesswoman revealed the grueling reality behind the scenes of the London show.

“This was easily one of the most demanding productions we ever navigated,” Knowles shared. She explained that Beyoncé, then two months pregnant with Blue Ivy, was experiencing profound nausea. In a testament to her professionalism, the singer would retreat backstage between songs to be ill, only to return seconds later to deliver a flawless performance for the cameras.

Knowles noted that this specific era solidified her perception of her daughter’s professional resilience. At the time, the pregnancy was a closely guarded secret; while the crew and band observed that the star was unwell, the true cause remained confidential. “As sick as she was, she persevered and absolutely commanded that stage,” Knowles added.

The concert special originally aired in late 2011, shortly after Beyoncé’s legendary pregnancy reveal at the MTV Video Music Awards. Fans will remember the iconic moment she finished her rendition of “Love On Top” and unbuttoned her sequined blazer to debut her baby bump to the world. Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z later expanded their family in 2017 with the birth of twins, Rumi and Sir.

In her 2025 memoir, Matriarch, which recently topped The New York Times bestseller list, Tina Knowles delved deeper into the emotional complexities of that time. She addressed the painful public skepticism and “fake pregnancy” theories that circulated after a specific television interview, highlighting how cruel the commentary felt given Beyoncé’s previous struggles with pregnancy loss.

“The public had no concept of how difficult it was for her to endure multiple miscarriages,” Tina wrote in her book. “When she was finally blessed to carry a child to term, it was heartbreaking to see people attempt to turn a cherished, prayed-for reality into a tabloid lie.”
