Mariko Hayashi has clinched the premier position on the Billboard Japan Book Hot 100 (dated Aug. 20) with her reflective essay collection, 80-dai ni Naru to Taitei Bokeru ka Shinu. 70-dai wa Kamisama kara Ataerareta Tokubetsuna Jikan.

First published in May, the provocative title loosely translates to “Most People in Their 80s Face Dementia or Death: Your 70s Are a Divine Gift of Time.” Now 72, the prolific author offers candid reflections on navigating health, personal aesthetics, lifelong work, personal finance, social connections, and leisure. A surge in recent television guest appearances revitalized in-store retail demand, driving the title to the top of physical sales while generating consistent momentum across e-commerce, digital downloads, subscription services, and social engagement. Marking its peak in its 11th week on the survey, the release makes history as the very first shinsho—a standard compact, pocket-sized nonfiction paperback—to lead the comprehensive chart.

Holding strong at No. 2 is Volume 18 of Izumi Tsubaki’s popular manga series Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun), which captured the runner-up spot in both physical shops and e-commerce platforms. Keigo Higashino’s 2023 mystery novel Anata ga Dareka wo Koroshita climbed to No. 3, buoyed by the release of its new mass-market paperback edition. The celebrated mystery writer, who passed away on July 23 at age 68, remains a dominant force on the survey, with Eien no Kioku resting at No. 6 and Hakucho to Komori (Guilt) Vol. 1 holding at No. 20.

The Billboard Japan Book Hot 100 monitors overall market performance by consolidating data across physical retail point-of-sale, digital purchases, library circulation, online subscriptions, and social media trends. Below are the top 10 bestselling titles for the tracking frame spanning Aug. 10–16.
