The Spaceballs Sequel’s New Title Is a Disappointing Retcon—Here’s Why

Comedy icon Mel Brooks, now 99, took to the stage at CinemaCon yesterday to pull back the curtain on the long-awaited sequel to his 1978 cult sci-fi spoof, Spaceballs. However, the title reveal came with a twist that leaves us feeling a bit shortchanged.

Fans will fondly remember the closing moments of the original film, where Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) asks the wise Master Yogurt (Brooks) if they might ever cross paths again. Yogurt’s prophetic, meta-humorous response was: “Who knows? God willing, we’ll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.”

In a promotional video shared during the event and subsequently posted to social media, Brooks—who produced and co-wrote this latest installment—announced the official title: Spaceballs: The New One. To address the elephant in the room regarding the title change, Brooks quipped, “I found the money. There it is, the money. It was in my basement,” gesturing toward a duffel bag overflowing with cash.

While the video is undeniably amusing and Spaceballs: The New One is a perfectly serviceable title, it’s impossible not to feel a twinge of disappointment that we weren’t gifted the glorious, self-mocking moniker promised decades ago. Perhaps it was inevitable; corporate studios rarely embrace such brazenly satirical titles. Whether it was the intervention of nervous executives or the feedback of humorless focus groups, the dream of a sequel officially titled The Search for More Money seems to have been abandoned long before production kicked off in 2024.

This situation echoes Disney’s creative interference with the Muppets franchise back in 2014. After the massive success of their 2011 reboot, the sequel was originally slated to be called The Muppets Again. The film’s opening musical number, “We’re Doing a Sequel,” even features lyrics explicitly referencing this clever title. Yet, according to director reports, the studio opted for the safer, albeit generic, Muppets Most Wanted instead.

For Spaceballs, I had hoped for a different outcome. Beyond finally delivering on a forty-year-old punchline, a daring, irreverent title would have served as the perfect curtain call for a legendary career. Sometimes, the joke is truly the best part of the product.
