Christopher Nolan has spent the past decade turning original films into major box-office events. His run goes from the sci-fi thriller Tenet to the Oscar-winning biographical drama Oppenheimer. His latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, has kept that streak going. It brought Homer’s ancient epic to theaters this summer.

Moviegoers will now get another chance to see one of Nolan’s earlier films. The twist-filled mystery thriller is returning to theaters for the first time in years.

The Prestige, Nolan’s 2006 film starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as rival magicians, comes back on Jan. 29, 2027, to mark its 20th anniversary. The Walt Disney Studios rerelease will include 70 mm and IMAX screenings. It will be the first time the film has played in those formats.

What Is The Prestige About?

The film is based on Christopher Priest’s novel and follows two rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London. Hugh Jackman plays Robert Angier, a charismatic showman. Christian Bale plays Alfred Borden, a gifted illusionist. The two start out as friends and partners, but a stage trick gone wrong turns their professional rivalry into a bitter personal feud.

Angier and Borden grow more and more obsessed with outdoing each other. They turn to deception, sabotage and increasingly dangerous illusions as each tries to become the greatest magician alive. The nonlinear storytelling and carefully planted clues have made the film a favorite among fans of Nolan’s puzzle-box narratives.

Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson also star, alongside Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie.

The Prestige drew strong reviews after its 2006 release and earned two Academy Award nominations, for cinematography and art direction. Its reputation has only grown since then. The intricate plot and memorable final reveal have made it one of Nolan’s most enduring films. The 2027 rerelease lets fans revisit the mystery on the big screen, in 70 mm and IMAX for the first time.
