The Next Breakfast Club Is Here: A Stylish New Coming-of-Age Game

Mixtape is a narrative-driven adventure defined by its carefully curated soundtrack, built around the experiences of teenage protagonist Stacey Rockford. To truly capture the essence of playing it, I’ve assembled a 10-song tribute mixtape that reflects my own journey through the same kind of suburban restlessness Stacey faces. My constraint was simple: I could only select tracks that would have defined my own teenage years. Feel free to spin this while reading via Spotify or YouTube.

Choosing an opener is an act of profound vulnerability. It’s the difference between a fleeting connection and something that sticks. You aren’t just picking a song; you are establishing a manifesto of rhythm and intent. Do you want to promise lifelong friendship, admit a secret struggle, or simply demand someone hit repeat? You have to set the stage immediately with something undeniable, cool, and rhythmically precise. Whether it’s raw energy or ethereal atmosphere, this is your invitation to guide someone through an unforgettable odyssey—building memories that will forever live in stereo.

Much like Rage Against the Machine’s legendary 1993 Lollapalooza appearance, Mixtape makes an explosive entrance. The latest title from Beethoven & Dinosaur—the visionary minds behind The Artful Escape—wastes no time setting its aesthetic. As you skateboard down a winding street to the pulsating synths of Devo’s “That’s Good,” the vision is clear: suburban longing, youth in revolt, and the frantic energy of endless parties. I am immediately drawn into this playable, memory-fueled coming-of-age tale. I’m ready to follow creative director Johnny Galvatron into the heart of his teenage rebellion.

“Remind me again of what I’m gonna miss?”

If your opener was a hook, the second track is about sustaining that momentum without being jarring. It requires a delicate hand to ensure the transition feels like a cohesive narrative rather than a disjointed playlist. You want the volume to dip just enough to invite conversation, creating a brief pause for intimacy before diving back into the flow. It’s a moment to connect.

Mixtape focuses on three teens navigating the final gasps of mid-’90s small-town life. Stacey Rockford is the sharp-tongued, music-obsessed leader dreaming of a career as a Hollywood music supervisor. Van Slater is the quintessential laid-back burnout, while Cassandra Morino feels like a pressure-cooker waiting to explode from her father’s suffocating control. Bound by an impending separation, they embark on one final mission: to crash the ultimate party, guided by a playlist Stacey has meticulously crafted.

It’s the perfect setup for a video game take on Richard Linklater’s Slacker. The game shines in its early hours, capturing the authentic banter as these distinct personalities clash and bond in Stacey’s bedroom, drifting through musical interludes and name-dropping cult favorites. Their chemistry is so natural that you find yourself rooting for them to make the party, fearing the moment the music stops and the group dissolves.

Now the mix can breathe. With the introduction settled, you have room to stretch. But avoid the temptation to alienate your listener with too many obscure, high-concept cuts. You need a few recognizable pillars to keep the journey approachable—a balance between challenging discovery and comforting familiarity.

While Mixtape features charming banter and cinematic framing, the true narrative weight rests on the music. The Beethoven & Dinosaur team excels as curators, stitching together over 20 tracks into a nearly seamless experience. Hits from The Smashing Pumpkins and Portishead sit comfortably alongside deeper cuts, creating a genuine soundscape of a teen music obsessive. Unlike out-of-touch media depictions of "cool" kids, Stacey’s tastes feel authentic—she’s listening to exactly the kind of deep, formative records that defined my own youth. It captures the honest, messy reality of discovering one’s identity through sound.

Think of yourself as a collage artist. Your task is to bridge genres, eras, and moods without breaking the flow. It’s an exercise in geographical musical storytelling—connecting Boston, D.C., and Portland in a line that makes sense to the listener.

The interactivity in Mixtape flourishes within its bite-sized minigames, each perfectly synced to a specific track. You’ll find yourself helping the trio evade the police in a runaway grocery cart, or finding catharsis at a baseball field. It’s reminiscent of a grounded Sayonara Wild Hearts, occasionally veering into magical realism where the gang soars through the air or destroys mailboxes while skating. You can feel the developers’ genuine delight in creating these small, varied vignettes that make you an active participant in their teenage rebellion.

“I know I’m weak; I know that I’m sad.”

A mix is more than just a party playlist; it’s a form of coded communication. Music allows you to voice the unspoken and whisper things you’re too shy to say face-to-face. Like asking someone out, timing is critical. You need to build toward your most vulnerable moments rather than leading with them, maintaining the subtlety required for the message to land.

After a lighthearted opening, Mixtape begins to reveal its true, deeper intentions. The carefree comedy gives way to something more sentimental. It’s aiming for the emotional resonance of The Breakfast Club, though it occasionally drifts into the territory of late-2000s indie rom-coms. The sentimentality is dialed up as the teens unpack their anxieties over heavy, emotionally charged tracks. It wears its heart on its sleeve; your reception to this earnestness will likely depend on how much you cringe when looking back at your own old teenage journals.

“Here things go from gray to gray and back to gray again.”

When it comes to length, I advocate for restraint. A 10-song tracklist is the gold standard—under an hour, with a defined center point. In this sequence, track six is where you strip away the facade. I chose “Head South” here because it was the first song that perfectly articulated the stifling nature of my own hometown. It’s an essential turning point to keep your listener engaged.

By the midpoint, I found my attention drifting from Mixtape. The repetitive cycle of bouncing between locations to trigger memories and minigames lacks dynamic range, despite the intended emotional stakes. It feels as though the story was constructed to serve the tracklist rather than standing on its own. The minigames often feel like mere visualizers, struggling to provide meaningful gameplay while a great song plays in the background. It suffers from the same issues as The Artful Escape: the interactivity feels secondary. There are crescendos in the music, but rarely in the actual experience.

“Though I have a broken heart, I’m too busy to be heartbroken.”

If you’re going to be intense, earn it. Loading a tape with non-stop melodrama dilutes the effect. A single, breath-taking emotional anchor needs to be deployed precisely when the narrative journey demands it.

There are moments where I question whether Mixtape is resonating with me, or if the soundtrack is simply doing the heavy lifting. Does the electric piano in Portishead’s “Roads” move me because of the narrative, or just because it’s a brilliant composition? It’s the same feeling as watching a Hans Zimmer-scored blockbuster—being emotionally manipulated by a master craftsman. The danger here is that the music occasionally distracts from the characters’ actual struggles. Would the game hold the same weight as a simple playlist?

For every heavy, six-minute track, there must be a follow-up that reminds you of the possibility of flight. Great mixes thrive on this push-and-pull, balancing ache with tenderness. They tear you apart only to stitch you back together. That is the rhythm of the heart.

Even when Mixtape threatens to lose its footing, it manages to pull me back to the surface. Much of this credit goes to the lovable trio, but the warm, animated visual style also plays a massive part. The suburbs are rendered with such nostalgic, romanticized lighting that they feel like a home you’ve never actually lived in. The minigames provide the developers room to experiment with everything from surreal, hyper-realistic close-ups to cathartic, explosive displays. When the music, visuals, and characters align, Mixtape finds its true voice.

The finale must be surgical. Regardless of how energetic the preceding tracks were, the final song dictates the lingering mood once the silence returns. You have one last opportunity to leave your mark.

Finishing Mixtape leaves me conflicted. On one hand, it’s a comforting, nostalgic blanket, perfectly capturing that desperate urgency to create a final memory before the inevitable splintering of a friend group. On the other, I struggle to define the game’s core identity. It feels like an ‘80s comedy filtered through a ‘90s lens, featuring characters who speak in 2020s idioms. Does the ending land because of the game’s own merits, or because it relies on the emotional weight of a final, infallible set of alt-rock anthems? I’m left wondering if the soundtrack is doing the heavy lifting, or if there’s a universal message beneath the surface that I’m still processing.

The closer is a falling action—that quiet moment when the lights come up, but you’re still processing the experience. Was it worth your attention? It needs to leave the listener with something bigger than the sound itself.

What has this mixtape—my own attempt to process Mixtape—really revealed? Beyond forcing you to listen to my favorite ’90s cuts, it’s an involuntary self-portrait. When you curate a mix, the songs choose you as much as you choose them. Looking back at this suite, I see my own punk-rock posturing and repressed melancholia reflected in every track. Maybe that’s the point: music is the ultimate mirror. Can you locate yourself in these sound waves?
