With the release of Christopher Nolan‘s grand reimagining of Homer’s The Odyssey fast approaching, audiences have finally been granted an extensive look at the upcoming epic. During an appearance on The Late Show this past Monday, Nolan surprised host and literary enthusiast Stephen Colbert by debuting the film’s latest, action-packed trailer as an exclusive reveal.

This fresh footage significantly elevates both the emotional stakes and the cinematic scale established in earlier teasers. On the dramatic front, we catch glimpses of the tension mounting back in Ithaca, where Odysseus (Matt Damon) struggles to navigate his return. Robert Pattinson makes a formidable impression as Antinous, the arrogant suitor relentless in his efforts to coerce Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and her son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), into believing that Odysseus is truly gone. The trailer also provides our first look at Charlize Theron as the nymph Calypso, confronting a weary and disoriented Odysseus about what he has forsaken.

Visually, the film is breathtaking. We see more harrowing shots of the cyclops Polyphemus, alongside a signature Nolan-esque sequence featuring a fortress engulfed in flames during the destruction of Troy. Furthermore, the trailer showcases a tense forest skirmish against armored adversaries—seemingly Nolan’s interpretation of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians—that carries a distinct, gritty atmosphere. We are also treated to a terrifying view of a massive whirlpool and, briefly, an incredibly endearing puppy.

Thematic undertones lean heavily into the “grizzled protagonist” archetype. While Odysseus and Telemachus aren’t traveling together in the vein of modern gaming duos, Damon portrays Homer’s legendary hero as a man cut from the same cloth as recent blockbuster icons: a battle-hardened, middle-aged survivor driven by an singular, desperate yearning to return to his family. “No one can stand between me and home,” he declares. “Not even the gods.”

Homer’s classic tale follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he attempts to navigate a treacherous journey home after the horrors of the Trojan War. His odyssey is fraught with divine and mythical hurdles—including the cunning Circe, the treacherous Sirens, and the towering Polyphemus. Despite the sheer impossibility of his circumstances, he remains steadfast in his vow to reunite with Penelope and Telemachus.

Joining Damon, Hathaway, Holland, Theron, and Pattinson is a stellar ensemble cast, including Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, and Logan Marshall-Green.

After a theater-exclusive campaign for the initial trailer, fans received their first official preview last December. That early look emphasized the protagonist’s trials across land and sea, offering a brief glimpse of the cyclops to ground the mythological foundations of the narrative.

The Odyssey marks Nolan’s return to the director’s chair following 2023’s Oppenheimer. Shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film, it holds the distinction of being the first production to utilize the cutting-edge Keighley IMAX camera, named in honor of IMAX’s long-serving quality experts, David and Patricia Keighley.
