The Witcher Season 5 Quietly Delayed at Netflix

The final season of Netflix’s The Witcher has been quietly delayed. Netflix marketing materials and the shooting schedule previously pointed to a 2026 debut, but What’s On Netflix reports that The Witcher season 5 is now slated for a 2027 release.

According to Redanian Intelligence, filming for the fifth and final season wrapped in September 2025. That milestone occurred shortly before Netflix released the fourth season in October 2025. New seasons of The Witcher have traditionally dropped every other year, making the planned arrival of season 5 an anomaly.

A report from Screen Rant notes that seasons 4 and 5 were produced and filmed back-to-back. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich stated last year that the writers treated season 4 and season 5 as one large story.

We knew we had to break it up in terms of how it would be launched on Netflix, but truly it’s the story of this family journey back together, and I think when we’re choosing specifically what details to include from the books, we look for a really sort of diverse sort of swath of things. And at the end of the day, it has to be 16 narrative episodes that feel cohesive.

Season 4 of The Witcher proved to be a low point for the live-action fantasy series, gathering some of its worst critical reviews ever. Some viewers also turned away from the show after the recasting of protagonist Geralt.

The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019 with Henry Cavill starring as Geralt of Rivia. The cast also features Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, Eamon Farren as Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach, and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Cavill stepped away from the series in 2022, and Liam Hemsworth took over the role. Cavill is currently focused on bringing the Warhammer 40,000 franchise to Prime Video.

Fans of The Witcher have another project to anticipate in the coming years: CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4, which features Ciri as the primary protagonist and launches a brand-new trilogy of games.
