The Mighty Nein, Critical Role’s latest animated adaptation, has debuted a striking new opening sequence. The sequence spotlights the ragtag ensemble—misfits, outcasts and antiheroes—engaging in high-octane action while teasing the darker, more personal histories that define characters like Caleb (voiced by Liam O’Brien) and Fjord (voiced by Travis Willingham).

Visually, the intro is superb: dynamic staging, strong character moments, and carefully framed shots that hint at each member’s inner turmoil. Still, when it came to the musical accompaniment, I found myself longing for a different tonal choice.

The show pairs the sequence with “Welcome to Wildemount,” a sweeping composition by Colm McGuinness taken from the soundtrack album of the same name (released by Critical Role’s Scanlan Shorthalt Music). It’s an elegant, atmospheric selection that will likely resonate with fans who cherish Campaign 2’s world-building and mood.

Personally, however, the piece doesn’t quite ignite the same rush I associate with Campaign 2’s early days. For me, the original theme—“Your Turn to Roll,” written by Jason Charles Miller and later supplemented with lyrics by Sam Riegel—captured the electric anticipation of the live-play episodes. Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham and Riegel, that track became an instant earworm when it first surfaced and remains a nostalgic pump-up anthem for many listeners.

So while “Welcome to Wildemount” is a fine, cinematic choice, it shifts the emotional register away from the rowdy, scrappy energy that originally defined The Mighty Nein’s actual-play presence. That tonal difference feels deliberate—Critical Role has already indicated the animated adaptation will diverge in places from the live campaign to suit the new medium—yet it’s still worth noting how much a theme can shape audience expectations.

The Mighty Nein arrives on Prime Video on Nov. 19. If you want to reacquaint yourself with Campaign 2 before the premiere—or experience the characters in their original actual-play context—the full run is available on Spotify and on YouTube.
