The Long Dark: Wintermute’s final episode delayed again, but now has an exact release date and a teaser
The wait for the concluding chapter of the celebrated survival game has stretched on for years, and Hinterland Studio is asking players for a little more patience.
Ten years after The Long Dark first launched and following seven years of work on the Wintermute campaign, Hinterland is readying its final push. The fifth and last episode, titled The Light at the End of All Things, will no longer arrive by the end of this year as initially planned — it now has an official release date: March 31, 2026.
The developers say most of the content is complete, but a number of cutscenes remain unfinished, the soundtrack still needs to be finalized, and mission polish is pending. The team opted to “take a few extra months to perfect the episode, optimize performance, fix bugs, and complete console certification.” At the same time, the studio released a new teaser that highlights key locations and hints at how the story will conclude.
The fifth episode is set to be the most ambitious installment yet: Hinterland reports it includes “two to three times more narrative and cinematic content than the fourth episode.” Players can expect new regions and a somewhat more linear narrative presentation, while preserving the solitary survival atmosphere that defines The Long Dark.
Although Wintermute is reaching its conclusion, the game’s world isn’t finished. Hinterland has already announced a sequel — Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 — which will introduce co-op play, urban areas, and a sanity system. The project is slated to enter early access in 2026.
