Middle-earth is calling once more. Warner Bros. officially confirmed at CinemaCon 2026 that legends Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will return to their iconic roles as Gandalf the Grey and Frodo Baggins in Andy Serkis’ upcoming feature, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The studio unveiled a gripping promotional poster during the event, placing the titular creature front and center.
The highly anticipated film is slated for a 2027 theatrical premiere and boasts a star-studded cast. Lee Pace is set to reprise his role as the regal Thranduil, while Academy Award-winner Kate Winslet has officially joined the ensemble as a new character, Marigol.
Andy Serkis, of course, remains at the heart of the project, both as the director and as the voice and motion-capture presence behind Gollum and Smeagol. This production marks the first live-action return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary universe since the conclusion of The Hobbit trilogy with 2014’s The Battle of the Five Armies.
The expansion of the cast also introduces some fresh faces to the franchise: Jamie Dornan will step into the boots of a younger Aragorn (Strider), and Leo Woodall—whose potential casting had been circulating in rumors for some time—has been confirmed to portray the character Halvard.
Serkis revolutionized the medium of motion capture through his nuanced portrayal of the ring-obsessed creature in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. He subsequently brought that expertise to King Kong and the modern Planet of the Apes franchise. Beyond acting, Serkis has honed his directorial vision on films like Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, making him a fitting steward for this specific chapter of Tolkien’s lore.
The Hunt for Gollum is expected to bridge the timeline between Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday and the fateful return of Gandalf to the Shire—a narrative gap briefly referenced in The Fellowship of the Ring but largely unexplored on screen. The story follows the arduous quest undertaken by Aragorn at Gandalf’s request, as they race to track down the creature to uncover the origins of the One Ring.
To flesh out this narrative, Serkis and his writing team—including Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens—are likely turning to the pages of Unfinished Tales. Specifically, the chapter detailing the “Hunt for the Ring” provides a harrowing look at the Black Riders’ search for the artifact after Gollum’s departure from the dungeons of Mordor.
While this project takes shape, Warner Bros. Discovery is simultaneously developing another live-action entry titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past. Meanwhile, fans of the small screen are still awaiting a release date for the third season of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, which has already wrapped production.
Mark your calendars for December 17, 2027, when The Hunt for Gollum arrives in theaters. Interestingly, the film shares its release date with Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars. Whether this leads to a cultural phenomenon similar to the “Barbenheimer” event or a clash of cinematic titans remains to be seen.
