The bucket trick in Skyrim appeared by accident — even the developers hadn’t thought of it

Curious players unearthed a striking method for stealing.

Many who played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim recall a peculiar stealth trick — you could place a bucket on a merchant’s head and then rob them without trouble (the bucket limits the NPC’s field of view).

Former Skyrim developer Bruce Nesmith told FRVR that the team never intended to include that as a feature:

It was a pure accident. I don’t think anyone even tried putting a bucket on someone’s head during development. That only started happening after the game launched!

Nesmith says he “knows exactly why it happens.” It’s a side effect of Bethesda’s work on Skyrim’s mechanics and world simulation:

You feel like part of Tamriel, free to explore and develop your character, and at the same time you sense real presence: “This is me. I am here.” That’s why you truly embody your character.
