The Boys showrunner analyzes season 5’s most brutal death: ‘The least surprising surprise ever’

In the fifth installment of The Boys season 5, titled “One-Shots,” the series embraces a classic comic book anthology style. By shifting the spotlight onto supporting players for a single, chaotic day, showrunner Eric Kripke balances the series’ signature dark satire with critical character-defining turning points as the show marches toward its final three episodes.

“I am perpetually drawn to exploring moral agency,” Kripke remarked to Polygon. “Whether you look at this series or my previous work on Supernatural, the narrative crossroads are always defined by ethical dilemmas. These choices serve as the true barometer for who a character—and by extension, a person—really is at their core.”

“One-Shots” is packed with high-stakes maneuvering: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) pivots toward protecting Homelander (Antony Starr), while Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) entrusts Hughie (Jack Quaid) with utilizing the V-One virus to safeguard Annie and Kimiko. Meanwhile, The Deep (Chace Crawford) escalates his petty vendetta against Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) in a bizarre, lethal showdown. However, the emotional weight of the episode rests on Firecracker (Valorie Curry). When her former pastor reaches out for help saving his congregation from the shadow of Homelander’s newfound religious movement, Firecracker chooses to betray her roots. Her public denouncement of her mentor leads to a swift and brutal consequence: Homelander ejects her from The Seven before ending her life.

“The world of The Boys functions within a surprisingly moral framework,” Kripke explains. “While it reflects the cruel realities of our world where innocent people suffer, there is an underlying sense of justice. Those who make righteous choices are typically rewarded, whereas those who consistently lean into depravity—like Firecracker and The Deep—eventually face the fallout of their own failed character tests.”

Kripke’s writing continues to mirror the turbulence of modern American politics, from the surreal imagery of populist leaders as messianic figures to the cold-blooded abandonment of loyalists. Firecracker’s arc mirrors the public dismissal of several high-profile political figures in the real world, illustrating the show’s knack for blending topical commentary with extreme fiction.

“It felt inevitable,” Kripke adds. “We scripted these dynamics years ago. It’s a recurring pattern: a leader demands the total surrender of a follower’s principles, only to discard them the moment they become inconvenient. It was, in many ways, the least surprising turn of events.”
