The Big Bang Theory Spinoff Renewed for Second Season at Max

HBO is pleased with how viewers have received the series.

HBO Max has renewed Stuart Bloom Can’t Save the Universe for a second season. The decision was made relatively quickly, as only four of the ten episodes of the first season have aired on the streaming service so far.

Amy Gravitt, head of comedy at HBO and HBO Max, stated that the project has generated interest from both fans of the original sitcom and a new audience:

“We are thrilled by how viewers have embraced this hilarious, genre-bending series. It has resonated with both The Big Bang Theory fans and new audiences alike. We cannot wait to see the worlds the creators dream up for these beloved characters in the next season.”

Channing Dungey, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group, called the spin-off an original evolution of a well-known franchise:

“Chuck, Zak, and Bill have created something special—a completely fresh take on one of the most beloved franchises that preserves the unique essence of The Big Bang Theory. We are excited to continue exploring the multiverse in season two.”

Stuart Bloom Can’t Save the Universe follows the comic book store owner, who accidentally breaks a device created by Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard to trigger a multiverse catastrophe. Denise, Bert, and Barry Kripke help him fix the consequences, and along the way, the characters encounter alternative versions of familiar figures from The Big Bang Theory.

Kevin Sussman returns in the lead role. Alongside him, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie reprise their characters.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season received 77% positive reviews from critics and 83% from audiences. New episodes air on Thursdays on HBO Max. Production schedules and a premiere date for the second season have not been announced yet.
