The Best Isekai Anime Series to Watch

Fans of anime have good reason to celebrate. As of Aug. 12, the three biggest series in the isekai genre are broadcasting or streaming simultaneously. The moment mirrors the 2004 to 2012 era when Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece aired together on TV Tokyo and Fuji TV.

In 2026, the three major shows are That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, and Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World. Re:Zero completed the trio when the second cour of its fourth season premiered on Crunchyroll on Aug. 12.

The first cour of Re:Zero season 4 ended on a cliffhanger. Subaru continues dealing with his memory loss while exploring the Pleiades Watchtower with Emilia, Betty, Ram, Echidna, Julius, and Meili. The group is searching for a cure for the curse affecting Rem and Julius. In episode 11, following a series of brutal deaths reminiscent of season 1, Subaru overcame his trauma and resolved to unravel the secrets of the tower.

Re:Zero returns to a familiar pattern after a slow setup

Episode 12 begins with Subaru waking up once again after activating his Return by Death power. Season 4 establishes that his memory loss forced him to relive the agony of accepting this power and learning how to use it to protect his allies. After moving past that hurdle, Subaru discovers that Meili pushed him down the stairs. Meili sought revenge for Elsa, who died fighting Garfiel during the attack on the Roswaal mansion. Following a lecture, tears, and reconciliation, the group forgives Meili. The party can now concentrate on the Watchtower trials, which should also bring back Subaru’s memories.

The narrative follows a recognizable structure. Re:Zero typically dedicates the first half of a season to building hardships for Subaru. Through repeated death and resurrection, he gathers the knowledge and resolve required to solve the central dilemmas. Season 3 diverged slightly by highlighting an ensemble cast and scaling back Return by Death, but season 4 relies on amnesia to return to that original loop.

While long-time viewers receive the core elements they expect, the early stage moves slowly. The first 11 episodes felt sluggish at times, and episode 12 offers little immediate progression for the overarching plot.

Mushoku Tensei season 3 slows its momentum

Mushoku Tensei season 3 runs into similar pacing hurdles. Following two strong opening episodes, the narrative slows down considerably. Viewers follow Rudeus as he settles into domestic life in the city of Sharia alongside his two wives, his daughter, his sister, his half-sister, his maid, and his mother, who continues to recover from her catatonic state.

Episodes 3 through 7 contain almost no combat or major conflict. The story functions well as fantasy slice-of-life storytelling, though it departs from what many Mushoku Tensei fans anticipate. Complications will inevitably disturb Rudeus’ domestic routine, especially with Eris poised to discover his two marriages. A recent trailer for the Chaos Breaker arc suggests that faster pacing and conflict will return soon.

The series excels when exploring character dynamics, yet five consecutive episodes without major developments take up substantial screen time across a limited season. With numerous unresolved mysteries across the wider world, the show spends too much time lingering on quiet domesticity.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime leads the current lineup

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime approaches its broadcast schedule with an ambitious plan. The production team organized season 4 across five cours, keeping the anime on television across 2026 and 2027 for roughly 15 months of total airtime. Despite its lighter tone, the fourth season maintains consistent momentum. The anime adapted the entire 10th light novel volume across its first 11 episodes and covered most of the 11th volume in the subsequent six.

The adaptation delivers the blend of kingdom-building, political negotiations, and fantasy skirmishes that defined earlier seasons. While Re:Zero and Mushoku Tensei lean heavily into intense personal crises, Slime maintains a broader perspective. Viewers focus less on Rimuru’s personal peril and more on the diplomatic challenges of governing a monster nation alongside rival factions.

Having three flagship series running at once remains a rare treat for audiences. Even if Re:Zero and Mushoku Tensei regain their footing in upcoming episodes, Rimuru Tempest currently delivers the steadiest run of the trio.
