Terry Gilliam Reveals Plans for His Final Film

Terry Gilliam, the director behind Brazil and 12 Monkeys, has named a project he hopes will serve as the culminating work of his career.

The film in question is “The Defective Detective” — a fantastical noir about an aging investigator who probes the murder of a young girl and is drawn into a magical realm where the laws of the real world no longer apply. At various times actors such as Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage and Danny DeVito have been linked to the lead role.

In the 1990s Gilliam wrote the screenplay himself and pitched it to Paramount Pictures, but the studio passed. He now intends to shepherd the project into production.

“There are new people at the studio, I have a new agent in Hollywood, and I’m trying to push the project forward… I’d like to shoot it before I die. It ought to be my last film,” Gilliam said while speaking at the Sitges festival in Spain.

To date, Gilliam’s most recent completed film is The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018), starring Adam Driver.
