The state of Tennessee is preparing a profound tribute to legendary songstress Dolly Parton following her passing.

On Friday, August 28, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee alongside officials from the Nashville International Airport (BNA) unveiled initiatives to officially rename the major transportation hub in honor of the beloved entertainer, who passed away earlier in the week.

“Dolly Parton’s incredible journey is permanently woven into the cultural landscape of our state,” Governor Lee remarked in an official statement. “As a primary gateway where Tennessee welcomes travelers from all corners of the globe, it feels entirely appropriate for the Nashville International Airport to carry the name of our most cherished icon, greeting visitors with her enduring legacy of timeless music, boundless generosity, unwavering faith, and signature warmth.”

This heartfelt announcement arrives shortly after the Queen of Country music lost her courageous, albeit brief, battle with cancer on August 25, according to representatives from her inner circle.

Lee noted that Parton’s family and management team have “expressed their deep appreciation for the overwhelming wave of affection and tributes dedicated to Dolly,” adding that they remain deeply moved by the proposal and eager to explore the idea further.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also championed the renaming effort through a heartfelt message published on Instagram.

“Dolly was actively collaborating with us on a magnificent hotel and cultural exhibition space known as SongTeller—a project she affectionately described as her ultimate love letter to Nashville,” O’Connell shared. “Now, it is our turn to reciprocate that love by transforming the Nashville International Airport into the Dolly Parton International Airport.”

The Metro Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) is set to review its existing naming guidelines alongside Governor Lee’s formal proposal during an upcoming session on September 17. Further specifics regarding the transition are anticipated to be revealed in the coming weeks.

“BNA serves as the front porch of Music City, bringing with it a profound responsibility to accurately reflect the finest attributes of our local community,” stated MNAA President and CEO Doug Kreulen.

Earlier in the week, a grassroots initiative launched via Change.org advocating for the airport’s rebranding quickly gained unprecedented momentum. By Saturday morning, the petition had successfully amassed upwards of 164,000 signatures from devoted fans worldwide.
