Study Says GTA 6 Could Cost UK 10% of Daily Economic Output
A new estimate puts the cost of the GTA 6 launch to the United Kingdom at £403 million (nearly $540 million) in lost output on release day. Earlier estimates suggested the launch could cost the US economy $1 billion.
Uswitch, a company that compares prices across a range of products and services, surveyed 1,000 employed Britons and extrapolated the results to the whole country. The UK has 34.5 million workers, so the estimate carries a considerable margin of error. The survey found the following:
- 26% will discuss Grand Theft Auto VI with colleagues on launch day.
- 21% expect to feel tired after staying up all night playing the game.
- 17% plan to adjust their work schedules.
- 17% intend to take a paid day off.
- 16% expect their productivity to drop.
- 14% will take an unpaid day off.
- 9% plan to call in sick when they are not actually ill.
Based on these figures, around 2.56 million workers could miss work for various reasons to play GTA VI on November 19. That amounts to 13.4 million working hours lost in a single day in the UK. The estimated losses of £403 million equal around 10% of the United Kingdom’s estimated £4 billion in daily economic output.
