Daft Punk reportedly turned down an offer to work on the GTA 6 soundtrack before Rockstar Games turned to Justice. A week ago, it was officially announced that Justice had composed the OST album for the game. According to one source, they were actually the second choice.

The information comes from an account on X (formerly Twitter). The same account had reported a delay to a new studio album six years ago, and that record never came out.

The Split

In February 2021, after 28 years together, Daft Punk announced the end of their musical partnership. They have released no new music since then. They also declined to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in their home country, held in Paris.

Given that history, a refusal would be consistent with the group’s recent behavior if Rockstar Games did approach them about the music for Grand Theft Auto VI. The offer reportedly came with “essentially an unlimited budget.”

Internet users have joked that the French duo rejected the developers behind some of the most successful video games ever made but agreed to collaborate with LEGO. The Danish company created minifigures of the artists and recreated scenes for them. The LEGO deal, however, involved only the use of the duo’s likeness rights. It did not require any creative work that would have meant the two members reuniting.

Half of the Duo

Daft Punk did contribute to GTA VI in part. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of the duo, served as a producer on Travis Scott — RHYNO, a track included on the game’s Music Album.
