CoMix Wave Films, the visionary studio that garnered international acclaim with emotionally resonant hits like Your Name and Suzume, is introducing a fresh creative perspective. Following the massive success of Makoto Shinkai’s directorial masterpieces, the studio is now spotlighting the debut of Ryo Katanozaka with a compelling new animated short film titled Shiranuhi.
Set to premiere in Japanese theaters on August 21, the story is anchored in a coastal Kumamoto village during the final days of summer 1996. It follows Minato, a ten-year-old boy whose world is marred by the shadow of an alcoholic and neglectful father.
Minato’s only reprieve from his domestic hardship is found on Benten Island. It is here that he meets Ben-chan, a goddess manifested as a young girl, who offers him the emotional fortitude to navigate his difficult life. However, when his father’s failures result in Minato being sent to a children’s home, the boy’s terror of being separated from Ben-chan drives him to appeal to a “Shiranuhi”—a mysterious, ethereal light floating above the waves. His prayer, saturated with resentment toward his father, eventually manifests as a formidable curse.
Early glimpses suggest that Shiranuhi will be yet another tear-jerker in the CoMix Wave tradition. Although Makoto Shinkai is not at the helm this time, the project appears to possess the same soul as his previous works. While his absence might give some fans pause, the film’s exploration of grief, affection, and fractured family dynamics suggests it will resonate deeply with those who admire the studio’s signature storytelling style.
Supporting Katanozaka’s vision is an impressive roster of talent. The soundtrack is being helmed by composer Taro Umebayashi, known for his work on Yuri on Ice and The Summer Hikaru Died. Additionally, the film will feature a theme song performed by the celebrated singer-songwriter Ichiko Aoba, adding an extra layer of atmospheric depth to the production.
