Stranger Things Season 5 Twist Brings Back the Show’s Most Controversial Episode

Stranger Things draws to a close after five seasons, leaving the Duffer Brothers with eight episodes to untangle the Upside Down and tie up the series’ character journeys. Amid the hunt for Vecna, large-scale set pieces, and interpersonal tensions, the writers slip in an unexpected nod to the franchise’s most polarizing installment.

In season 5, Hawkins is under strict military quarantine while government forces probe the Upside Down and continue the search for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) has been absent since his clash with Eleven in the season 4 finale, but Jim Hopper (David Harbour) still ventures into the Upside Down repeatedly, determined to find him. When a Demogorgon kidnaps Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher), Eleven pursues it into the other world, hoping to rescue Mike’s sister and finish what she started with Vecna.

Hopper and Eleven quickly discover that the military poses a threat as lethal as the monsters. They encounter a truck fitted with a device that completely drains Eleven’s power—so debilitating she and Hopper begin referring to it as her “kryptonite.” After interrogating a soldier psychically, Eleven learns the origin: the military is running a base inside the Upside Down, and the debilitating signal is being broadcast from a captive held there.

The duo infiltrates the base expecting Vecna, but the weapon renders Eleven powerless again. Hopper urges her to escape so he can finish the mission alone. A sentimental flashback—Hopper thinking of his daughter and her fearless acceptance of death—functions as an obvious misdirection, priming viewers for a sacrificial payoff with explosives hidden under his clothing. Instead of Vecna, Hopper finds someone long absent from Hawkins’ story.

Kali Prasad, known as Eight (Linnea Berthelsen), returns—her last appearance was in the divisive season 2 episode “The Lost Sister.” That Chicago‑set hour, which split Eleven from the Hawkins core group, introduced Kali as another lab escapee with similar powers. Kali fled before Eleven, forged her own path as a gang leader, and used her abilities to exact revenge on past tormentors. She embraced Eleven as a sister and tried to recruit her; Eleven ultimately chose to return to Hawkins and her friends.

Given Kali’s history of clashing with government operatives studying psychics and the Upside Down, it’s believable that Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) and her team located her and exploited her abilities. The device weakening Eleven appears to be fueled by Kali’s power while she’s imprisoned in the Upside Down.

While Eleven and Hopper fail to find Vecna that night, freeing Kali represents a strategic win. If Kali comprehends how her psychic gift was weaponized, she could reverse the effect and use it against Vecna. Joined by Eleven and perhaps Will—who manifested formidable new abilities in the mid‑season finale—the reunited allies may finally have the firepower needed to neutralize Vecna and the Mind Flayer, and to protect Hawkins once and for all.
