Legendary director Steven Spielberg has weighed in on the impressive box office performance of indie horror hits Obsession by Curry Barker and The Backrooms by Kane Parsons.

“I think it’s marvelous that they accomplished so much with such modest budgets—especially Obsession, which was made for just $1 million, and The Backrooms, which likely cost around $9 or $10 million. They have performed exceptionally well, and I applaud them. I haven’t had the chance to watch The Backrooms yet, but I certainly plan to. I did see Obsession, however, and I was absolutely thrilled by it,”

Spielberg remarked in a recent interview. Focus Features’ Obsession has raked in an impressive $166 million globally. Meanwhile, The Backrooms has set a historic milestone for A24, becoming the studio’s first film to surpass the $100 million mark at the domestic box office.

Spielberg’s latest project, the science-fiction feature The Disclosure Day, is slated for theatrical release on June 12.
