Lidlocks’ compact three-hour exploratory adventure thrusts players into the shoes of a determined pet owner tracking down her runaway dog, substituting suburban cul-de-sacs for sprawling, meticulously detailed environments reminiscent of a Where’s Waldo? illustration. It is a delightfully whimsical and soothing experience that instantly resonates with anyone who has ever loved a pet.

The story begins when Frendy takes her Dachshund, Jazz, out for a routine stroll. Convinced she has spotted Polka—her cherished French Bulldog from childhood—the duo embarks on a whimsical pursuit spanning over two dozen increasingly absurd levels. Naturally, they track their quarry through an unmistakable trail of canine calling cards: puddles and exceptionally fragrant droppings.

Every single stage is an exquisite hand-drawn tableau overflowing with eccentric inhabitants and amusing scenarios. While wandering through a pastoral farm, I encountered what appeared to be an oversized pig, only to discover upon closer inspection that it was actually an alien disguised in livestock attire. Elsewhere, I stumbled upon an enthusiastic fitness enthusiast practicing his Kamehameha energy blast, and later paused to appreciate a musical ensemble comprised entirely of Elvis impersonators.

Finding Polka essentially translates the classic puzzle-book formula into an interactive medium. While the primary objective is ostensibly to locate the missing canine, half the joy stems from absorbing the rich background details packed into every frame. The narrative framing mechanism might initially induce a sense of urgency—after all, Polka is perpetually on the move—yet resisting the rush is essential. True satisfaction comes from taking your time to admire the artistry and uncover the hidden oddities tucked away in the scenery.

Beyond simple wandering and observation, the game offers a wealth of lighthearted optional side activities, such as completing delivery errands for locals in exchange for an enthusiastic high-five. In one particular stage, I retrieved a legendary staff for an unassuming wanderer who transformed into Sun Wukong, subsequently soaring across the skies above me on a magical cloud.

Players can also dive into various engaging minigames, including penalty shootouts and impromptu volleyball matches. Astute explorers will uncover stealthy ninjas hiding in plain sight or stumble upon a young girl accompanied by a giant panda, which rewards you with Polaroid snapshots of a real-world canine counterpart presumably serving as the muse for Polka herself. Much like a curious hound meandering along a boardwalk, sniffing shoes and investigating discarded treats, I found myself constantly delightfully sidetracked.

Beneath the charming black-and-white aesthetic of Finding Polka lies a surprising undercurrent of emotional resonance. Frendy is chasing the ghost of her childhood pet, and as time has marched on, she is no longer the child she once was—a poignant subtext that naturally clicks into place. While it may not deliver the heartbreaking emotional devastation of fellow canine-centric adventure Neva, it ultimately concludes with a fittingly bittersweet resolution.

To experience everything Finding Polka has to offer is akin to pursuing a runaway dog through the pages of a lovingly illustrated sketchbook, where delightful surprises lurk around every corner. It is a triumph of boundless imagination, humor, and heart. And, most importantly, it features plenty of very good dogs.
