Starfield Arrives on PS5 Alongside a Significant Price Drop

Following a long period of industry rumors and more than two years as a platform exclusive, Bethesda Game Studios has officially confirmed that its sprawling space odyssey, Starfield, is headed to the PlayStation 5. The cosmic RPG is slated for an April 7 debut, launching in tandem with a massive technical overhaul that Bethesda describes as the most significant update since the game’s original release.

This PlayStation 5 port is designed to take full advantage of Sony’s specialized hardware. Players can expect immersive haptic feedback via the DualSense controller, utilizing the adaptive triggers, light bar, and touchpad for enhanced gameplay depth. For those gaming on the PlayStation 5 Pro, Starfield will offer tailored optimization settings, including a “Pro Performance Mode” for fluid frame rates and a “Pro Visual Mode” for maximum graphical fidelity.

The transition to PS5 represents a notable strategic shift for Bethesda, which joined the Xbox first-party family in 2021. While Xbox lead Phil Spencer previously hinted that major Bethesda releases might remain exclusive to recoup Microsoft’s acquisition costs, the company has recently embraced a more multi-platform approach. This trend began with titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and was further solidified in a 2025 interview where Spencer suggested that Starfield was never entirely off the table for PlayStation users.

Upon its arrival, the base version of Starfield will be priced at $49.99—a standard price point that will now be reflected across Xbox and PC versions as well. Additionally, Bethesda will offer a Premium Edition for PS5, which will be available in both physical and digital storefronts.

Coinciding with the April 7 launch, Bethesda is rolling out two substantial content expansions. The first is a new narrative-driven DLC titled Terran Armada, followed by a major free update dubbed “Free Lanes.” These additions aim to flesh out the game’s universe with fresh story arcs and quality-of-life improvements.

Since its 2023 debut, Starfield has garnered a generally positive critical reception, maintaining a respectable average score of 85 on OpenCritic. However, the game has not been without its detractors. Some critics have argued that the studio’s massive ambition occasionally outpaced its execution, noting that the sheer vastness of the galaxy sometimes felt sterile, with the most rewarding experiences hidden beneath layers of procedural repetition.

Despite these critiques, the move to PlayStation 5 opens the door for a massive new audience to explore the Settled Systems, marking a new chapter in the game’s ongoing evolution.
