If the visceral, high-stakes conclusion of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord’s first season left you stunned, rest assured, you are in good company. When we first met Darth Maul in episode 1, he arrived on the crime-ridden world of Janix with grand ambitions to forge a new criminal empire from the ground up. By the time the finale, “The Dark Lord,” arrived, that dream had largely shattered, leaving his allies scattered and his roster of associates decimated.

Below, we dissect the pivotal moments from this epic finale and theorize what lies ahead in season 2, reconciling the events here with Maul’s established trajectory in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Rebels.

[Editor’s Note: This breakdown contains major spoilers for episodes 9 and 10 of Maul — Shadow Lord.]

Sith vs. Sith: Darth Maul faces his ultimate challenge

Throughout Star Wars lore, Darth Maul has engaged in legendary duels, most notably against Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, episode 10 of Shadow Lord introduced a terrifying new benchmark: a direct confrontation between Maul and Darth Vader.

While Maul spent years bedeviling the Jedi of the prequel era, he never squared off against Anakin Skywalker himself—only his master, Obi-Wan. Escaping the city of Janix into the unforgiving jungle provided the stage for their long-overdue encounter. History has shown that facing Vader is typically a fatal mistake, and Maul proved no exception. Despite fighting alongside Jedi Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara, the trio was utterly overwhelmed, forcing a desperate retreat from Janix.

In the ruins of Janix, Maul didn’t just witness Daki’s end—he orchestrated it. While Daki and Devon were busy contending with Inquisitors, a wounded and calculating Maul seized an opportunity. He used the Force to shove Daki into Vader’s path, effectively using the Jedi Master as a sacrificial distraction to facilitate his own escape.

Devon, witnessing her mentor’s brutal death, lashed out in a surge of raw, vengeful rage that temporarily drove back the Eighth Brother. In her moment of grief and vulnerability, Maul swooped in with a promise to train her and facilitate her revenge against Vader. This is a devastating blow; with Daki dead, Devon has lost her last tether to the Jedi Order, leaving her wide open to Maul’s insidious influence.

The fate of Captain Brander Lawson

Maul — Shadow Lord does not shy away from brutality. Alongside Daki’s demise, Captain Brander Lawson made a seemingly heroic final stand to ensure the safety of his son and his team. However, as is common in Star Wars, without seeing a body, death remains a speculative outcome. Lawson sustained injuries and retreated into the fog, leaving his survival ambiguous. Given the franchise’s history of miraculous returns, one shouldn’t rule out the possibility of seeing him again.

By the conclusion of the ninth episode, Maul’s position had become precarious. With his Mandalorian and Zabrak forces wiped out, along with the loss of his pet Spybot and loyal second-in-command, Rook Kast, his Shadow Collective lay in ruins. This desperation forces him into a closer alliance with Dryden Vos of Crimson Dawn. Maul faces the challenge of navigating the hierarchy, specifically dealing with Vos’s superior, Rintero. While Solo confirms Maul eventually secures control of the syndicate with Vos as the figurehead, the mechanics of this takeover and the Empire’s role in the power vacuum remain compelling mysteries for season 2.

Season 2 promises to explore Devon’s descent into the dark side as she seeks retribution for her master. Whether this is intended to mirror—or perhaps replace—previous iterations of apprentices in the expanded canon remains a subject of intense fan debate. Furthermore, her eventual absence from Maul’s timeline in Rebels raises the question of whether she successfully breaks away or falls as another casualty of the Empire.

Regardless of the path taken, the shadow of Darth Vader looms large. Given the terror Maul displays toward the Sith Lord in later years, the trauma inflicted on Janix likely only scratches the surface of the conflict yet to come.
