Star Trek Drops the Race to Compete with Marvel — ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Creators Give the Franchise a Fresh Start

The next film in the Star Trek universe will be completely separate from any of the projects currently in existence.

It seems Paramount has opted to reboot Star Trek from the ground up. Deadline reports the studio has enlisted Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo known for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and for their work on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Game Night — to develop the new feature.

Goldstein and Daley will not only write but also produce the film through their production company GoldDay. Sources indicate they are expected to take the director’s chairs as well. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, but insiders say the project will stand entirely apart from the current films and series. In practice, that means audiences should not expect a continuation of the Chris Pine storyline, but rather a fresh take on the universe with new characters and a different cast.

This direction echoes comments recently made by Paramount CEO David Ellison. He remarked that “the next Star Trek won’t be a sequel — it will open a new chapter.” According to Ellison, the goal is to draw in a new audience and restore the lightness and adventurous spirit the franchise lost while attempting to emulate Marvel-style blockbusters.
