Spotify announced a setting Tuesday (Sept. 15) that allows parents and guardians to stop music aimed at kids and families from influencing their personal taste profile.

The option prevents animated-movie soundtracks, nursery rhymes, and children’s TV theme songs from skewing listening experiences for users whose accounts are shared with children.

Spotify can now distinguish between music played for a child and music a user actually wants to hear.

Once the setting is disabled, kids and family music will no longer factor into personalized recommendations like Discover Weekly and Daily Mix. It will also be excluded from listening insights, including the year-end Spotify Wrapped recap.

The change applies retroactively, meaning previous streams from children’s soundtracks will stop counting toward top songs or artists once the setting is switched off.

Parents can still search for, play, and add kids’ music to playlists without those tracks contributing to their personalized taste profile.

The feature is rolling out globally on mobile for both Free and Premium users. It is turned on by default, requiring users to manually switch it off.

Users can open Spotify, tap their profile picture in the top-left corner, go to “Settings and privacy,” and select “Content and display” to switch off “Include kids and family music in taste profile.” Spotify states it can take up to 48 hours for the change to fully appear in personalized recommendations.

The new setting accompanies broader efforts to give families control over platform use. The company also offers tools to remove individual songs or playlists from taste profiles, alongside managed accounts that provide younger listeners with an age-appropriate experience.
