Spain Submits “Saturn Return” for International Oscar Consideration
Spain’s selection committee has officially chosen the musical The Black Ball (La bola negra), directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, as its candidate for the 2027 Academy Awards.
The film held its world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it was honored with the Best Director award. The narrative weaves together the lives of three men across different eras—1933, 1937, and 2017—drawing profound inspiration from an unfinished novel by the legendary Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.
The Black Ball features a star-studded cast, including musician Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau (Elite), Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close. The film is scheduled for release on Netflix on December 2. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 14, 2027.
