South Dakota Roadway Network

Welcome back to the Great Plains! Today, we are excited to offer a closer look at the intricate transportation infrastructure coming to the South Dakota map expansion for American Truck Simulator. From major logistical arteries to hidden rural gems, here is a glimpse of what you will be navigating.

South Dakota Highway View

In reality, South Dakota boasts an expansive network of over 82,000 miles of roadway. However, the true character of the state lies beyond the bustling interstates. Much of this mileage consists of tranquil country lanes, meandering backroads, and pastoral stretches that cut through undulating prairies and quaint rural communities. While state highways represent less than a tenth of the total distance, they serve as the state’s lifeblood, accommodating over two-thirds of all vehicular traffic and linking primary urban centers.

Interstate 90 serves as the primary east-west corridor across the Mount Rushmore State. Crossing the border from Wyoming, drivers will encounter a peaceful rest area nestled within lush green grasslands, providing sweeping panoramic views of the vast Midwestern horizon.

As you traverse the state toward the east, you’ll find a variety of truck stops ranging from massive logistical hubs to smaller, cozy pit stops—ideal for refueling both your rig and yourself. The journey is visually engaging, particularly as I-90 bridges the James and Missouri Rivers, offering drivers scenic waterfront perspectives.

Furthermore, I-90 incorporates several key Business Route interchanges. These provide seamless transitions from the high-speed interstate directly into the heart of cities like Mitchell and Rapid City, ensuring deliveries reach downtown destinations efficiently.

The expansion also highlights vital secondary routes like U.S. Route 12. Situated in the northeastern corner of the state, this highway winds through a picturesque lake district featuring Rush Lake and Blue Dog Lake. This region is a celebrated destination for local anglers and offers a refreshing change of scenery for long-haul truckers.

For those who love a detour, we are designing several unique “Road Trip” routes. These scenic paths vary in accessibility; while some are built for heavy-duty trucking, others are intended for lighter vehicles. Today, we are showcasing two such routes within the breathtaking Black Hills National Forest, characterized by tight curves and stunning forest elevations.
