The corporation reminded customers again that a digital purchase does not guarantee permanent access to content.
Sony warned PlayStation owners that 551 films and television series purchased through the PlayStation Store are disappearing. Users received notifications stating that as of September 1, they “will no longer be able to access previously purchased StudioCanal content, and the movies will be removed from their video library.” The company cited the expiration of licensing agreements as the reason.
The list of removed titles includes Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Total Recall, Rambo: First Blood, Cliffhanger, and From Dusk Till Dawn. The full list appears on the official PlayStation website.
Kotaku contacted Sony to ask whether customers will receive refunds or compensation for the removed content, but the company has not yet responded.
This situation highlights why gamers increasingly support the Stop Killing Games movement. Clicking the buy button in a digital storefront grants a customer a license to rent content indefinitely, but third parties can end this access at any time. This vulnerability drives the debate over physical editions like Grand Theft Auto VI, which contain an activation code instead of a playable disc.
