Sony Reminds Players They Do Not Own PlayStation Store Games

Sony has updated the PlayStation Store terms of service, reminding PlayStation 5 owners that purchasing digital games grants only a limited license rather than legal ownership.

Notifications sent to users state that buyers receive a “limited, non-transferable, and revocable license” for personal use of the software on a specific device.

The clarification sparked backlash across social media, particularly amid reports suggesting that Sony plans to gradually move away from physical media. Players expressed concern that an all-digital ecosystem would allow the publisher to revoke access to their purchased libraries at will.

Such licensing terms are not unique to Sony. Nearly identical clauses have long been part of user agreements on Steam, Microsoft, and Nintendo platforms, where digital goods are licensed rather than sold as personal property.
