The hunt for box office glory has officially ended for Kraven the Hunter. After a string of lackluster releases that failed to gain traction without the web-slinger himself, Sony is finally hitting the reset button. During a recent guest appearance on the entertainment podcast The Town, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that the studio plans to completely reboot its cinematic universe of Spider-Man spin-offs and villains.

Rothman remained tight-lipped regarding the specifics of this overhaul, offering no clues about a timeline or the creative teams involved. He did, however, emphasize that the studio is seeking a fresh start with new perspectives. This pivot follows the disastrous theatrical run of Kraven the Hunter at the tail end of 2024. According to Deadline, the film resulted in a staggering $71 million loss for Sony, grossing just $62 million worldwide against a production budget that climbed as high as $130 million.

It wasn’t always a losing game for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The franchise launched with significant momentum; the original 2018 Venom was a global phenomenon, earning over $850 million. While the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, didn’t quite reach those heights, it still cleared the $500 million mark. The downward spiral truly began with 2022’s Morbius, which struggled to find an audience.

Morbius eventually stalled at $167 million and became more of an internet meme than a cinematic success. The franchise took another hit with the release of Madame Web, which failed to resonate with critics or fans. Even Venom: The Last Dance, the final installment of Tom Hardy’s trilogy, couldn’t restore the franchise to its former glory, despite outperforming its immediate predecessors.

The year 2024 saw an unusual saturation of the brand, with Madame Web, Venom 3, and Kraven all hitting theaters within months of each other. Rothman acknowledged that this overabundance was a tactical error, noting that both Sony and Marvel Studios are beginning to prioritize quality over volume.

“Scarcity has value; you have to give the audience a chance to miss you,” Rothman explained, discussing the general fatigue surrounding superhero cinema. He noted that “absence makes the heart grow fonder,” a philosophy that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also appears to be embracing.

Looking ahead, Sony and Marvel will collaborate on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth solo outing for Tom Holland, which is slated for a July 31 release. Additionally, fans can look forward to the Spider-Noir live-action series starring Nicolas Cage, arriving on Prime Video later this year.
