Slay the Spire 2 Creators Congratulate Bungie on Marathon Release — Deckbuilder’s Player Count Ten Times Higher Than Extraction Shooter’s
By way of comparison, the original Slay the Spire never managed to exceed a peak of 60,000 concurrent players, whereas its sequel has already skyrocketed to over 420,000 active users at the time of writing.
March 5th saw the simultaneous debut of the deck-building sequel Slay the Spire 2 and the extraction shooter Marathon.
The developers behind Slay the Spire 2 initially offered a tongue-in-cheek congratulatory message to the Bungie team, expecting fans to appreciate the irony. However, they likely didn’t anticipate just how much their indie title would overshadow the latest high-budget project from the creators of Destiny 2.
Slay the Spire 2’s player count rapidly eclipsed the record set by the first game, currently sitting at a monumental 420,000 concurrent users. In a stark contrast, Marathon reached a peak of 88,000 players, which has since dwindled to approximately 40,000.
