Skyrim Mod Remaking Morrowind Receives Its Biggest Update in Years
Skywind stands as a remarkably ambitious endeavor: a total conversion mod designed to rebuild the iconic The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind using the modern game engine of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Although the project has been in development since 2012, the dedicated team recently emerged from a two-year hiatus to provide a substantial progress update.
On May 8, the Skywind development team premiered a video on their YouTube channel, showcasing the significant strides made by their legion of over 100 volunteers since 2024. The project is nearing completion in several key areas, with the vast majority of 2D and 3D assets, script writing, and voice performances reaching their final stages. Impressively, 10 out of Morrowind’s 13 distinct regions are largely finalized, and approximately 75% of the required animations are now finished.
Despite these monumental milestones, considerable work remains. The team is currently focused on complex tasks such as multi-language localization, the creation of remaining clothing assets, finishing the challenging Red Mountain region, post-production audio mastering, and the intricate implementation of quest scripting. Consequently, the team is not yet prepared to commit to an official release date.
Regardless of the eventual launch timeline, the sheer scale of the project is staggering. Rather than a simple graphical overhaul using existing Skyrim assets, Skywind represents a comprehensive reconstruction of an RPG classic. This immense scope, combined with the logistical challenges inherent in a volunteer-driven development model, clarifies why this undertaking has required such extensive time to realize.
Upon its eventual debut, the mod will feature the entirety of the base game. Furthermore, teams further along in the development cycle have already begun preliminary work on bringing Tribunal and Bloodmoon content into the fold.
As Morrowind has yet to receive an official studio remake, Skywind is shaping up to be the definitive way to experience the legendary Vvardenfell journey once it finally arrives.
