Should You Play as a Spiritborn or Paladin in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred?
In Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, the Warlock and Paladin emerge as the latest classes to brave the treacherous lands of Sanctuary. Each archetype offers a distinct playstyle defined by unique mechanics and tactical strengths. With the launch of this expansion, it is the perfect time to dive in; however, your overall enjoyment will hinge on choosing a character that aligns with your personal goals and preferred gameplay rhythm.
To help you decide, we have outlined whether you should champion the path of the Warlock or the Paladin in Lord of Hatred.
Should you choose the Warlock or the Paladin?
Every major expansion is an ideal opportunity to experience a fresh narrative through a new lens, and you are likely debating which of these two newcomers fits your style best. While both are perfectly viable for clearing the main campaign, the “correct” choice depends on your experience level and what you value most in an ARPG.
If you are a casual or returning player looking to immerse yourself in the storyline without unnecessary friction, the Paladin is your best bet. Conversely, if you thrive on strategic depth and technical challenges, the Warlock provides a much more rewarding, albeit demanding, experience.
The Paladin: Resilience and Reliability
Available to early adopters of the Lord of Hatred DLC since December, the consensus is clear: the Paladin is formidable. Its true strength, however, lies not in raw burst damage, but in unparalleled survivability.
The Paladin excels at weathering the storm of boss encounters. With defensive staples like “Defiance Aura” to bolster your armor and resistance, and “Consecration” to provide consistent self-healing, you can comfortably withstand heavy incoming damage. Furthermore, the “Condemn” ability offers excellent crowd control, making short work of dense dungeon mobs.

Paladin is remarkably intuitive. Even without following a rigid build guide, reading through your skill tooltips allows you to assemble an effective kit quite naturally. It balances single-target precision with efficient area-of-effect damage.
That said, the Paladin lacks the lightning-fast mobility of the Rogue or the explosive, screen-clearing power of the Sorcerer, resulting in a more methodical, deliberate pace. If you crave high-octane twitch gameplay, the Paladin’s straightforward nature might feel a bit stagnant as you progress into the endgame.
The Warlock: Mastery of the Occult
If you prefer complexity and mastery over your foes, the Warlock is your calling. This class is a Swiss Army knife of darkness: you can command demonic entities, weave debilitating curses, or unleash torrents of hellfire.
The Warlock remains consistently engaging because of the sheer variety in its kit. You can hybridize your playstyle to summon minions while simultaneously transforming into a demon yourself. The “Soul Shards” mechanic adds a layer of depth, allowing you to invoke specific entities to tailor your approach to any given encounter.
Unlike the tanky Paladin, the Warlock is a traditional “glass cannon.” It relies on aggressive positioning and neutralizing threats before they can retaliate. While it offers high-impact crowd control like “Tyrant’s Grasp,” it punishes poor positioning severely. You have access to mobility tools like “Nether Step” to blink out of danger, but you must remain vigilant; one mistake during a boss fight can lead to a swift death.

The Warlock’s resource management is also more demanding than other classes, requiring you to balance both Wrath and Dominance simultaneously. To truly unlock the class’s ceiling, you must master skill synergies and rotation timing. It is a rewarding project for those who enjoy theory-crafting and refining their builds to perfection.
