Global icon Shakira has spearheaded an initial $1.25 million recovery initiative aimed at rehabilitating educational facilities devastated by a catastrophic earthquake in her native Colombia. The philanthropic campaign was unveiled during an unannounced humanitarian visit to the epicenter of the crisis.

The singer-songwriter arrived in Quibdó, the regional capital of Chocó, where nearly 200 educational institutions suffered severe structural damage following the fatal 7.4-magnitude tremor that struck western Colombia. During her visit, Shakira surveyed compromised classrooms, spoke directly with displaced pupils and educators, and conferred with provincial Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba and Quibdó Mayor Rafael Bolaños to assess the territory’s most pressing recovery priorities.

The collective $1.25 million fund represents a coalition of international partners. Shakira and Live Nation have collectively supplied $500,000, complemented by an equivalent $500,000 contribution from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, alongside $250,000 from CAF (the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean). Capital distribution will be orchestrated through Shakira’s non-profit organization, Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation), focusing on infrastructural reconstruction and the prompt resumption of academic instruction.

Philanthropist Howard Buffett, a longtime collaborator on Colombian academic initiatives who accompanied the artist on-site, separately pledged that his foundation will underwrite the full reconstruction of 10 additional schools across Chocó. Reflecting on their shared mission, Buffett remarked, “When she calls, I come.”

“My gravest concern is that structural rebuilding stalls after the immediate crisis wanes,” Shakira emphasized. “Every single day a child is excluded from the classroom is an irrecoverable forfeiture of their potential.”

Her foundation maintains a legacy spanning over two decades in the region, currently administering two local academic centers. Reaffirming her ongoing commitment, Shakira noted her intention to focus personal philanthropic efforts on revitalizing a regional technological university.

Chocó remains one of the most socioeconomically marginalized and geographically secluded departments in Colombia. Spanning a territory comparable in scale to Switzerland, its municipalities rely predominantly on riverways and rudimentary road networks, significantly impeding emergency logistics. Shakira’s intervention mirrors a broader surge of solidarity across the Latin entertainment industry, joining benefit initiatives led by peers such as Karol G, Marc Anthony, and Chayanne.

Throughout her multi-decade career, the Grammy-winning artist has consistently bridged international musical milestones with structural advocacy. Since establishing Fundación Pies Descalzos in 1997, she has continuously expanded educational access for underprivileged youth across vulnerable Colombian communities.
