While Saros may not be a direct narrative sequel to Returnal, it is undeniably a spiritual successor that refines and expands upon the high-octane roguelike foundation established by Housemarque. The title represents a bold step forward, leaning into the mechanical brilliance of their previous work while introducing several transformative features.

The latest State of Play presentation shed light on the key elements that distinguish Saros from its predecessor. Most notably, the game shifts away from absolute isolation by introducing a cast of survivors located in “The Passage.” This hub area allows players to engage with NPCs between runs, adding a layer of narrative depth. Furthermore, the game appears to boast a significantly more comprehensive permanent progression system, offering players a wider variety of long-term upgrades to pursue.

Player agency also receives a boost through customizable difficulty modifiers. The trailer demonstrated how players can toggle specific abilities on or off to tailor the challenge to their preference. Housemarque emphasized that while flexibility is a priority, they have meticulously balanced these options to maintain the game’s intended tension. In a major departure from Returnal’s structure, players can now teleport directly to unlocked biomes, streamlining the experience for those looking to jump straight into late-game content.

The developer also detailed the intriguing “Eclipse” mechanic. Players can manually initiate an eclipse, which triggers a dramatic audiovisual shift in the world. During an eclipse, adversaries become more aggressive and deal increased damage. However, braving this heightened danger is not without its benefits, as the state provides unique gameplay advantages that make the increased risk a calculated tactical choice.

Saros is set to launch on April 30.
