Tim Sweeney Again Criticizes Valve Over Steam Rules Requiring Disclosure of AI Use
Opponents of AI are using the disclosures on Steam store pages to target and harass developers.
Some developers use artificial intelligence when making games, and many players dislike it. Some players automatically label a project “AI slop” if AI was used in its development in any way.
Valve requires Steam developers to post a notice about AI use on a game’s page and to explain exactly what the technology was used for. Critics of AI have started tracking these disclosures and harassing developers. Browser extensions have also appeared that automatically flag games that use AI.
An example of one developer’s Steam disclosure recently went viral on social media:
As a small indie developer, I naturally used AI tools to help develop this game, including work on graphical elements and writing code.
Developer Matt Workman criticized the Steam rules. He said that “the very idea of mandatory disclosure of AI use in 2026 is absurd,” and added that the requirement is “truly shameful” for Valve and Steam.
Epic Games head Tim Sweeney joined the discussion and backed that position:
Forcing developers to write a political statement that will be used against them by the very hate mob they help organize is disgusting.
Sweeney has criticized Valve before over the requirement to disclose AI use.
