It has been a turbulent season for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer community. On March 14, Sarah Michelle Gellar delivered a crushing blow to fans via Instagram, confirming that the highly anticipated Hulu revival, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, has been scrapped. During her promotional tour for Ready or Not 2, Gellar suggested the project met its demise due to a hostile executive at Hulu who harbored a distaste for the franchise.

The news left the “Scooby Gang” faithful in a state of mourning, prompting a digital scavenger hunt for the defunct pilot’s script. The fervor escalated when Variety published an in-depth investigative report that drew heavily from the leaked materials, detailing the internal friction that led to the show’s downfall.

In a recent conversation with SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio, Gellar expressed her reservations about the script circulating online. “I genuinely hope it stays hidden because it invites premature judgment on an unrefined product,” the actress and executive producer remarked. She emphasized that a pilot is merely a blueprint, drawing a distinction between this situation and the shelved Batgirl film. “That movie was a completed work; this was a project still in its infancy.”

Gellar clarified that the creative collaboration between director Chloé Zhao and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman was strictly focused on the inaugural episode. Rumors regarding the pilot’s flaws began to swirl following reports that Hulu executives were unimpressed by Gellar’s limited screen time and a tone they perceived as “too juvenile” for their target demographic.

The scrapped script allegedly featured Buffy living under the alias Anne Summers, working in a corporate New York City office. This peaceful existence was designed to be short-lived, as the narrative planned to draw her back to Sunnydale to mentor a new Slayer, Nova (played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong), during a fresh vampire resurgence. Despite mandates to rewrite the pilot to center more on Buffy and adopt a grittier, adult-oriented tone, Hulu—specifically Disney executive Craig Erwich—reportedly remained unconvinced.

While the finalized version of the pilot remains under lock and key, an early 2024 draft has surfaced in certain online circles. Gellar has pleaded with the fanbase to ignore these leaks, asserting that they do not represent the team’s true artistic intent. “If you happen across it, please don’t engage. You aren’t seeing our actual vision,” she urged.

The prospect of seeing Gellar return to her most iconic role remains uncertain. While a reboot seems like a guaranteed success, Variety reports that Disney is currently not interested in shopping the project to rival networks. However, a glimmer of hope remains; as reported by People, internal sources suggest that “the door remains ajar” for future chapters in the Buffyverse.
