In the screen adaptation of the manga based on the novel “Ikusagami,” 292 samurai clash in a deadly contest for a 100 billion yen prize.
Netflix has released the Japanese series Ikusagami: Last Samurai (Last Samurai Standing). This historical drama with thriller elements follows 292 warriors who enter a lethal competition to claim an enormous cash reward.
The project is adapted from the manga by Shōgo Imamura and Katsumi Tatsusawa, itself based on Imamura’s novel. The story unfolds during the Meiji era — a period of rapid reform when Japan balanced ancient traditions with Western modernization. The protagonist, Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), joins the tournament to save his wife and child.
For the original novelist, the series was nearly a personal triumph. Imamura admitted he wrote Ikusagami with an international audience in mind and had long imagined Okada in the lead. Netflix granted both wishes: the actor not only brings Shujiro to life on screen but also serves as a co-producer. The series was directed by Michihito Fuji, Kento Yamaguchi, and Toru Yamamoto.
After its premiere, the show earned a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on six reviews). Critics praised the production, its attention to historical detail, and its striking scenes of violence, noting that Ikusagami blends the atmosphere of Shōgun with the momentum of Squid Game. ScreenRant writer Lewis Gleyzbrook called the series “one of the best action shows in recent years,” while also pointing out some simplistic characterizations and occasionally dated themes.
Netflix has not yet announced a renewal, but the original manga is still ongoing, leaving the door open for a second season. All six episodes of Ikusagami: Last Samurai are now streaming on Netflix.
