Rockstar Veteran Calls GTA 6 Leaks Minor Compared to GTA San Andreas Hot Coffee Scandal

Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar North, weighed in on recent Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leaks published by a hacker known as Cyberleek, describing the incident as minor.

Addressing the online discussion on social media, Vermeij urged fans to remain calm. He explained that Rockstar Games marketers aim to keep their projects confidential longer than other publishers and emphasized that the situation presents no real disaster for the studio.

All that happened is that some footage from the game leaked online. A bit early, ahead of the presentation on Netflix scheduled for next week. 90% of future players do not spend time on the internet searching for video clips. They don’t have the time for it, and they don’t want to catch spoilers.

Vermeij noted that current Rockstar Games developers are likely a bit annoyed, but nothing more. Comparing the situation to his own past experience during the Hot Coffee controversy surrounding Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, he highlighted the stark contrast in severity.

For management (Rockstar New York), it was a nightmare, but it barely affected us (Rockstar North). The current leaks are far less significant than the one with Hot Coffee. It looks like GTA VI will be phenomenal and will sell for another 15 years or so. The leaks are just a minor trifle.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 of this year for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have not yet announced a release date or launch window for the PC version.
