Rockstar Reveals Complexity of GTA VI World

Grand Theft Auto VI will closely match the depth and complexity of Red Dead Redemption 2, relying on current-generation console hardware to deliver the largest and most detailed open world in Rockstar Games history.

Following the showcase of GTA 6, Rockstar North head Rob Nelson spoke to IGN about the map design and world design philosophy, explaining that the game heavily rewards unguided exploration:

In Red Dead Redemption 2, there really is a whole other world. GTA VI is very similar. There are a lot of things you will discover on your own, and we won’t necessarily guide you to them through missions, map markers, or icons. If you take a little time to explore, you will be richly rewarded. It’s a big map, a very big map.

Nelson noted that the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles enabled the team to significantly expand the scale. GTA 6 will also introduce greater NPC diversity, featuring characters with different heights and body types. Their animations now adapt to individual character models dynamically, a feature previously constrained by older console hardware.

GTA 6 is a continuation of our team’s push in that direction. We are doing everything we can to build the biggest, deepest, most densely populated, and most complex world we have ever made.
