Rockstar Cut Planned Refrigerator Mechanic From GTA VI

Rockstar dropped a full grocery-shopping system for the refrigerator in GTA VI to avoid cluttering the gameplay.

Rockstar abandoned a grocery-shopping mechanic in GTA VI that would have allowed Jason and Lucia to visit supermarkets and restock their home refrigerator.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North and head of development, discussed the decision in an interview. The developers originally wanted to tie the system to character weight, health, and stamina mechanics that would depend on diet and physical exercise.

At a certain point in development, we experimented with a system that allowed you to buy groceries and restock the fridge. We had ideas for grocery stores where you could buy items and bring them home, which would then replenish the refrigerator. However, that would have complicated the mechanics, so we had to simplify everything.

Rockstar chose to scrap the system in favor of more accessible gameplay.

We always try to strike the right balance between realism and playability. Instead of just walking up to the fridge for a snack or visiting a restaurant purely for roleplay, we want every action to matter.
