Robert Kirkman Wants Magic: The Gathering to Adapt His Invincible Series
Back in 2020, Wizards of the Coast fundamentally altered the landscape of Magic: The Gathering by introducing a series of cards inspired by The Walking Dead. This crossover, born from the gritty world created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, proved to be a watershed moment for the TCG. Now, as Invincible Season 4 prepares for its March 18 premiere on Prime Video, Kirkman has expressed a strong desire to see his acclaimed superhero epic receive the same tabletop treatment.
“I’m definitely interested,” Kirkman told Polygon in a recent interview. “If you have a direct line to the team at Wizards of the Coast, let’s make it happen.”
The original Walking Dead collaboration represented a major shift for Magic’s Secret Lair series, moving away from simple aesthetic reprints to debut mechanically unique cards tied to outside intellectual properties. This initiative laid the groundwork for Universes Beyond, a brand that has since integrated titans like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Final Fantasy. While vocal segments of the player base remain wary of the game becoming a “cardboard version of Fortnite,” the overwhelming commercial success of these sets has made them a central pillar of the game’s release schedule.
While Wizards might have to navigate the graphic nature of the series, Invincible is a thematic goldmine. Its sprawling universe—populated by cosmic threats, complex moralities, and diverse alien races—is a natural fit for Magic’s gameplay systems. Wizards has already forged a multi-year partnership with Marvel, beginning with a Spider-Man release in 2025 and escalating with a full Marvel Super Heroes set in June 2026.
An Invincible expansion could easily adapt several existing mechanics. “Transform” cards would perfectly illustrate secret identities or characters like Monster Girl, while “Sagas” could narrate pivotal storylines like the Invincible War. For the series’ intergalactic narrative beats, Magic could utilize the outer-space frameworks introduced in Edge of Eternities. With The Hobbit and Star Trek scheduled for 2026, fans can only hope that 2027 becomes the year of the Viltrumite Commander deck.
Invincible Season 4 arrives on Prime Video on March 18. New episodes will debut every Wednesday until the finale on April 22.
