Robert Eggers to Direct “Romeo and Juliet” Adaptation

Robert Eggers, the visionary director behind The Lighthouse and Nosferatu, is set to helm a fresh cinematic reimagining of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.

Focus Features is slated to produce the project. Details regarding the casting for the iconic lead roles have yet to be revealed.

It has been confirmed that the dialogue will be delivered in Early Modern English to maintain historical authenticity. This classic tale has previously been brought to the screen by legendary filmmakers such as Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann. Meanwhile, fans of Eggers can look forward to his upcoming horror feature, The Werewolf, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, arriving in theaters this December.

Back in 2025, the director had expressed interest in adapting Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, though that venture never moved into active development. In other news, Paramount is scheduled to release Ti West’s own adaptation of the holiday classic, featuring Johnny Depp, this November.
