“Resident Evil” tops the global box office

Zach Cregger’s horror film Resident Evil dominated the global box office during its opening weekend, pulling in $108.3 million. The movie marks the most successful debut in the history of the franchise.

Domestic receipts in the U.S. accounted for $60 million, while international markets contributed an additional $48.3 million. The production was made on a budget of $75 million.

Based on the iconic video game series, the adaptation follows a courier (played by Austin Abrams) who finds himself trapped in Raccoon City at the height of a zombie apocalypse. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay alongside Shay Hatten (John Wick). Critics have lauded the film, granting it an impressive 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
